Happy Halloween

Today marks the last day in October, which is crazy to think about. I feel like it was just September 19th and I was moving in to Blackburn. But alas, tomorrow marks the first day of November, which also means my birthday is right around the corner. WOOOOO! 19!! Such an exciting birthday, no? Last year as a teenager. But if anyone wants to get me anything for my birthday they can get me a "Ann Arbor is a whore" t-shirt. UniversiTees stopped selling them and I'm quite upset.

Let me start off by saying Halloween at Ohio State is kind of a let down. Let's just say it's tame enough where I saw little kids wandering around campus on Friday night with their parents. I don't think that could happen in Madison... So we have one of the largest campuses in the nation and it's a rather tame weekend. It makes sense since one of the biggest Halloween parties in the nation happens to be right over at OU. Basically half the campus went to Athens for the weekend. It was fun seeing everyone dressed up in costumes on Friday night. It just sucked because it was a nice 75 degrees on Wednesday and then BAM! Two days later it drops to 50. It made walking around High Street in a flapper dress a little uncomfortable. So back to Halloween being a total bust at Ohio State; all the parties this weekend were super exclusive so if you didn't know anyone, good luck getting in. That's why last night my group and I stayed in to watch the game and SNL. Seriously, no joke. I'm a college kid who just stayed in on a Saturday. It's all okay because Beat Michigan Week/Mirror Lake Jump IS our Halloween. Just come talk to me the week of my birthday, it'll be a great birthday week.

Me and Mackenzi as flappers!

This past week officially marked halfway through the quarter! 5.5 weeks of school done, 5 more to go plus 4 days of finals! Time has just flown; I can hardly believe it. Pretty soon I start scheduling for winter quarter. So the past few weeks I had to finish up my 6-quarter projection for engineering and oh my goodness do engineers ever have to front load! For those who don't know, at Ohio State, engineers have to apply into the major, so right now I'm technically "pre-engineering." It's along the lines of pre-med and such, but I obviously don't have to go through 80 years of schooling. So I'm trying to aim to apply to the major next winter quarter and be accepted for spring 2011. I'm just worried about the quarter to semester change between my sophomore and junior year; right now with the quarter system I can graduate in 4 years, but I'm worried that might get pushed back with me losing a quarter of classes a year. But in order to apply to the major I have to take a bunch of required classes first. Basically on a quarter system, the average student takes 16 credit hours per quarter, but as an engineering major, I should take an average of 19 credit hour per quarter.

This could very much be my schedule next quarter

Yeah, thanks to only one German 299 class, only one Chem 125 lecture, and lab days for both engineering and chemistry falling on either Tuesday or Thursday, I don't have a lot of leeway in scheduling for Winter 2011. The only day that sucks is Tuesday, but other than that, every day isn't all that bad!

Side note: I am becoming and expert in lab write ups and memos for engineering and chemistry. I can whip one up in no time.

Please listen to this and that's all I ask.

Okay, bye!

Homecoming

What a past few weeks! Sorry it has been a while since I've last updated, but I have been quite the busy girl! This week was homecoming at Ohio State, and today there was the parade and pep rally. I will say I had no idea that the Buck-I-Guy would be in the parade, but hey, Ohio State is crazy. There was also Gee, Archie Griffin, and the band (plus other floats, but they're really not that important). The previous people I just mentioned all spoke at the pep rally along with the new NCAA president (who is in town to witness his first college football game as president), the AD, and of course the 6 football captains. The football players (minus Dane Sanzenbacher and Cam Hayward) were actually pretty shy. None of them wanted to speak! Hahaha. But here is Dane speaking about the loss to Purdue last year:
Dane Sanzenacher: "We're pissed off. You guys should be pissed off too!"
B. Rolle: "Yeah, I'm pissed too."
Then there was this quote from Gee:
Gordon Gee: "Did you know the Princeton Review ranked Ohio State as the number one most obnoxious school? I'm quite proud of that!"
Oh, and there were free burgers. What could be better than that?

So the Muse concert rocked! It was awesome, a little on the short side (90 minutes including the encore... I mean, Weezer, who played a free show, played 105 minutes), but still an excellent show none the less.

Set list!

The lights were amazing. I mean, that's the reason tickets cost so much!

So many lights!

The best part of the whole show? The very last song each member of Muse put on custom #2 OSU jerseys! Amy and I freaked out. To top it off, the last song they played was Knights of Cydonia. By far my FAVORITE Muse song. There was no other way to end a concert! But on a side note, right before the concert I had a math midterm, and I had to leave straight from the midterm to the concert. So I went to my math midterm all super dressed up (skirt, leather jacket, you know...). That was a fun experience.

Then on that Friday I went to the Blackhawks/ Blue Jackets home opener game with Amy. Oh my god. Student ticket pricing is amazing. For the lower bowl, no matter what game, tickets are $25. Do you know how good of a deal that is? At Nationwide those seats would start at $90, and at United Center those seats where we were sitting would start at $175. But the game was a solid win for the Hawks (5-2!). Amy and I got a lot of people asking us why we were Blackhawks fans if we go to OSU. That was always a fun thing to explain.

Toews!!!!

So not this past weekend but the weekend before was Parents Weekend at Ohio State and my dad came down. Don't get me wrong, it was great seeing him, but I was just dropped off at college 4 weeks ago (well, now 5, but at the time it was 4). And that night was the UW/OSU football game. It ended up being a very sad night (or a happy night if your name is Jack Jablonsky). My dad and I went to a view party at the football practice field, and at the end of the game everyone sung Carmen Ohio. Let me tell you that was the saddest sounding Carmen I've ever sang/heard. It almost made me cry for the wrong reasons. But hey, we killed Purdue this week (49-0!). Oh, and that same weekend a guy named Obama came to Cbus and spoke at the Oval. IT WAS SO FREAKING COOL! Obama gave an amazing speech. I guess it was the largest crowd for an Obama rally ever (35,000+). So at one point in his speech Obama had a giant car metaphor that was talking about Dems and the GOP and how the Dems inherited a giant mess from the Bush administration and how the Dems had to fix the mess/"car" basically by themselves. At the end of the giant metaphor, Obama goes:
Obama: "What do you have to put your car in for it to go forward?"
Crowd: "D!"
Obama: "And what do you have to put your car in for it to go backwards?"
Crowd: "R!"
Get it? So. witty.

This past school week came and went. Nothing too special to report. I honestly don't even remember what happened. All I know is that I had the easiest chem lab of the year on Thursday (50 minutes instead of the normal 3 hours) and I'm pretty sure I also took the easiest calc quiz too. I best be getting 100% or else I will be upset with myself. Other than that, nothing much else. OH! I GOT MY HALLOWEEN COSTUME! Mackenzi and I are being flappers, me with a black dress and her with a white one. We open up the package yesterday to find that my dress is called "Chicago Flapper" and hers is called "Broadway Babe". For those of you that don't know Mackenzi, she is an actress and really wants to be on Broadway, and I, well, am from Chicago! We had no idea. We freaked out. It was great.

This Wednesday is Hug A Ginger Day. You all better participating!

I can finally put picture from my camera onto my mac so here is a picture or two of my dorm!

Desk! If you send me something I will probably put it on my cork board... just a little incentive :)

My clothes barely fit. I think I'm using 58/60 hangers.

I think that's all...

#1

Unless you live under a rock or go to a school that does not have a football team or just simply don't care about sport, you obviously know that Ohio State is now ranked number one in the AP Top 25. Yes, that's great and all, who doesn't want to be #1? But I really don't want to be ranked so high. Let's be ranked second again, okay?

Being ranked #1 is really the only reason I title the post the name I did. I'm not going to say that I'm trying to link football to a giant metaphor of my life right now. Seriously, I'm not that clever. I will say though that this week is going to be one of the best weeks in a long time! Tomorrow (besides my calc midterm) I get to see Muse and Metric at the Schott! SOSOSOSOSOSOOOOOOO PUMPED! Plus the tickets were only $30 (thanks D-Tix!) compared to $100+ in Chicago. And then on Thursday with my mentor I am going to take a belaying class so I can become certified to do the ropes when people rock climb (plus I can use OSU's rock wall whenever I want then!). Friday I get to go to the Bluejackets home opener against none other than the Blackhawks! It'll be a blast because I found a group of Blackhawks fans on campus so we're going to be singing Chelsea Dagger after goals. It'll be great. To cap off the fun week, my dad will be coming down for parents weekend (plus Alex will be up from Cincy)! So it will be a fun week, but super busy.

Since the week is so busy I don't have time to write anything super lengthy at the moment. But the past week went by really fast. I got major sunburn at the game on Saturday and now my face is really red :( Oh, and yesterday was the start of the intramural flag football season. Ughh, do not get me started on the rules; they are very patronizing and degrading towards women. It wasn't the best of times. Plus the team we played was wayyyy too into it and name calling was thrown around (a lot towards me now that I think of it). But I will say we have the best team name: Hide Yo Kids Hide Yo Wife. Yes, we are the ENR Scholar team, but who needs to be called ENR Scholars?

Right now I am in the middle of download Inventor for my computer, which is basically a really expensive CAD program that I need for engineering and it is designed for a PC. So this might be the only time someone will hear me say I wish I had a PC at the moment. It's taking 3+ hours to download (but that's with every system) and hopefully it works. But I get it for free through Ohio State and I can use it for the next three years. It's actually a pretty sweet program but right now I just need it to download! AHHH!

Okay, gotta study for my midterm tomorrow.

(I will leave you with the awesome video)

Only at OSU...

...would academic groups schedule events around the football games. That's right, my ENR scholars group purposely scheduled the annual camping trip on an away football game. I mean, it is pretty smart of them because there would be a lot (I mean A LOT) of bitching if we had to miss a game. Back to camping. So this past weekend all first year ENR students went on an overnight camping trip to Hocking Hills in southeast Ohio. And in order to get there, we took a CABS bus. No joke. Here is a picture of the park:

It was really pretty! There were some big cliffs, and when we went off on our own, we actually climbed the cliffs. But when we first got there we went on a guided tour of the park. Let me just show you a picture of our tour guide:

Meet Patty Quack. He was one crazy guy. He was waayyy too into his job, but it made for a fun time! Later that evening it began to rain and it did not stop raining until we got back to campus and even then it was drizzling. We had a delicious meal of hot dogs, burgers and PB&J, and then around 7:30 Mackenzi and I headed to bed. Yeah, 7:30 pm. We were so tired. So we curled up in our super intense sleeping bags (they can go down to -18°C!) and slept in a very cozy (6 man) tent. The rain was very soothing and out stuff did not that wet at all (and thank goodness for rain boots!)! It was a very warm night of 13.5 hours of sleep. In the morning we actually had a hot breakfast which was really nice since I haven't had a hot breakfast since I left home. But everyone wanted to go home after breakfast but we were scheduled to go on another hike. In the rain. We FINALLY headed back to campus around 11:45, and everyone on the CABS bus was asleep. So we're dead tired, right, and we drop off our stuff at the ARC, and we board the bus to go back to the dorms when we find out we had to set up our tents again for the staff. We weren't the happiest people to be around, but we did our job and set up the rainy, muddy tents. We finally made it back to campus and just in time to get brunch at North Commons. Overall, it was a pretty fun weekend!

Besides camping, the past week was relatively uneventful. I did, though, go on a midnight rainy walk through campus with my floor bff Brian, pictured here:

"Walk in the rain... while you still can"
We actually take a lot of late night walks together now that I think of it. This past Sunday we went to Buckeye Donuts at 2 am. (It's kind of scary how dead High is at 2 am on a Sunday. I mean, it's expected because it's a Sunday, but if you go on High at 2 am on a Friday or Saturday, a little different.) So yeah, walking in the pouring rain was fun stuff.

I also played a lot of sand volleyball this past week. Team Funeral represent! Actually, a lot of my floor does a lot of sports together. Ultimate, basketball, volleyball, wallyball, and they all seem to be really late at night. Now that I think of it, our floor likes to do a lot of stuff late at night. Including my RA, who does not seem to enforce quite hours (which is nice, not gonna lie). My RA!

Meet Kerry

Other random thoughts from the week:

  • Dried mangoes are delicious

Brian and Aaron eating some dried mangoes
  • I'm on the ENR flag football team
  • People can be very mean to freshman (I'm talking to you, senior RA from Haverfield!)
  • Marcus, who lives on my floor, is trying out for the baseball team
 Good luck Marcus!
  • The best deal at Ohio State? Cheeseburger as a side!
  • Happy birthday to Andreas, Mason, Magda, and Kermit!!! They all have birthdays this week!
That is all for now. I'm going to leave you with a song from my favorite band at the moment, Florence + the Machine. I'm actually in love with their CD. It's all I've been listening to all week/weekend. Okay, here you go:
